Parent Support Advisors

Durham County Council has appointed 37 Parent Support Advisors. This is a new role which is being tested by the Government and County Durham is one of the first areas this is being tried.

The Parent Support Advisors are based in primary and secondary schools across the County and work in partnership with parents and pupils to ensure they, and their families get the most out of the educational opportunities available to them.

Support includes Parenting Support Groups, Parenting Courses and one to one support for families to help parents gain confidence in their parenting skills and deal positively with discipline.

The support involves providing parents and children with the information and support they may require when the child moves school especially from primary to secondary school as this can be very worrying for both parents and children alike.

Families are being offered access to a range of Family Learning opportunities providing a fun way to help parents understand what their children are learning in schools.

Support is also available to families of children who have difficulties with attendance where reasons for the poor attendance can be identified and practical help offered.

Please enquire at your local school for more information about services in your area.
